Martyn Waghorn

Derby have matched Middlesbrough’s bid of £5million and are now favourites to sign the player according to John Percy at the Telegraph.

Percy has an excellent record in getting things right when it comes to the club and appears to be their favoured journalist when it comes to breaking news of bids.

£5million is a lot for a player who only last year cost a potato. Or something like that. I think that’s what got Tweeted. Either way, he was cheap from Rangers when he signed for Ipswich and he went on to have a really good season.

It’s clear that Lampard wants energy and endeavour in all of his players. The energy side of things was Derby’s downfall last season and each of the signings made so far would indicate that he thought the same.

For all of David Nugent’s hard work, he can’t be expected to run the line for 46 games when he’s 33 with over 500 games under his belt. Don’t get me wrong, he won’t be discarded by Lampard and I’m sure he’ll remain a key member of the squad until his contract expires the following summer but if Derby are to finish in the top six or perhaps higher then Nugent isn’t the man to rely on.

Back to Waghorn though. His season for Ipswich was excellent with 16 goals and 11 assists for the Tractor Boys who are now weirdly calling us tinpot. I don’t get that, but whatever.

He takes a mean corner, will run and run and has an excellent left foot. Ignore the price and we’re (hopefully) signing a really good Championship striker. Say what you like about Tony Pulis but he can spot a decent player and there’s a reason that Middlesbrough are in for him too.

There has to be some outgoings in the coming days. Although, it is slightly hilarious / brilliant that we’ve told everybody that we’re skint yet have proceeded to spend comfortably in this window.

Cameron Jerome will likely make way. He has been touted to go to Preston and work under Alex Neil again but his wages are apparently an issue. And then we come to Matej Vydra. I’m still holding out hope that a Premier League club will panic and stump up the cash to sign last seasons top goalscorer but we shall see.

After #MarriottCheckIn and #GoodEvans, surely #Waghorny will follow…
