Matej Vydra / Nahki Wells

August 07, 2018 - Joel Clyne

The latest is that Matej Vydra will leave and Nahki Wells will arrive on a season long loan deal.

I think it’s fair to assume that the majority of us were surprised when Wells was mentioned as part of the deal. Derby are in need of shipping players out, not getting more in so the addition to Wells to the side doesn’t make too much sense.

It feels a little like Derby have been boxed into a corner over this deal. There appears to be little interest elsewhere for Vydra (which is still a bit weird given his exploits last season) and Burnley have driven a hard bargain knowing that Derby need a sale.

I get the sense that Burnley have offered below what Derby want and are refusing to budge. The compromise is that we get a player of some value and quality in to substitute for that.

Wells has done little over the past year. Barely playing for Burnley and not scoring since his £5million move last summer.

In Huddersfields promotion campaign in the year previous he netted 10 league goals but faired well in a struggling side the year before, scoring 17.

Where he fits in at Derby is a good question. His link up play isn’t the best but he can certainly finish and there should always be room for that in a squad.

That being said, it’s difficult to see him starting games with David Nugent and Jack Marriott already available and the likely signing of Martyn Waghorn soon to be pushed through.

Then there’s Cameron Jerome, Chris Martin and Nick Blackman as central strikers who must surely be moved on in the coming weeks.
